Notebook: a cousin, three campuses, one platform, 26 August 2026

A cousin arrived with GEM, the plateau, and Tahrir before supper. Tarek walked them from Galaa Street to one door — the old hall on the square — and sat on the pavement until the cousin admitted the list was a network map. They entered one house. They wrote the buffer at 12:50 with coffee that still tasted like coffee. Sand stayed geology. The Giza campus stayed a later date. The unfinished obelisk in the plate is the honest version of a sentence people tell themselves in August: we were already on the asphalt, so the next mass counts as remainder. Remainder, on this nail, is a carriage coupled after the train has left.

The halt is written while tea is still tea

Kilometres already driven are not credit toward another house. A campus that looks at the plateau through glass is still one house; sand keeps a separate clock and separate tickets. February air is more comfortable, not a coupon for two branches. A dawn landing and a midnight flight is still one climb: choose the house that fits the body you actually have. A bundle of museums plus a boat plus a smile is extra height. This desk does not couple that bundle. August paper in this climate holds one house. Name it over breakfast and mean the period. Geology will wait. River light after vitrines is leftover colour, not permission to write a second branch.

On 22 August the sitting in the old hall ended with coffee on Galaa Street. It did not continue to Bab al-Khalq on the theory that the walk home passes a door. Passing a door is not a house. Wood in Old Cairo and brass at Bab al-Khalq are two attentions; courtesy, not leftover minutes, decides whether a nave is even thinkable. A northbound ticket has already spent a looking. Sleep in Alexandria, or do not put that city on this spur. El Kab’s walls live in another governorate. Southern rubble does not open a metal room Downtown. Downtown metal does not open a hush in Fustat.
